The Timer is responsible for starting the handlers and dogs. The Timer gives the handler permission to start their run.
Recommended for:
Someone with previous trial experience.
- This job requires full attention and no distractions. Focusing on the dog crossing the start line and finish line is critical. One person must time and entire jump height within a class to minimize timing differences. The Judge will give you specific instructions on timing a class before the first dog runs.
- If manually timing, before going to the ring pick up two stop watches and a whistle from the Score Table. Make sure that the whistle and stop watches work.
- The Timer is important in keeping the competition running on time. You must cue the next dog and handler by saying "Go when ready" or "Please go now"loudly and clearly as soon as you see the Judge is ready and you are ready to begin.
- Check immediately that the electronic timer or watch is running. It if is not sound the horn or blow a whistle immediately and loudly, no later than the third obstacle to stop the run.
- If timing a class that requires manual starting or stopping of the electronic timer (Jackpot, Snooker, or Fullhouse in CPE), sit where you can see both ends of the start line and of the finish line. You must be able to see when the dog crosses these lines.
- Focus on the starting line. Start the time when any part of the dog's anatomy crosses the start line. If the handler places the dog in a position where the dog is already across the starting line, advise the handler to move their dog back behind the starting line.
- Stop the time when any part of the dog's anatomy crosses the finish line as they are approaching the last obstacle, whether the dog actually attempts the last obstacle. Unless advised otherwise, do not stop the watch if the dog crosses the finish line at any other time while running the course.
- In the event of some unusual circumstances, do not stop the timer unless directed to by the Judge.
- Read the time exactly as it is displayed on the timer or stop watch.
- If using a stop watch, clear the watch as soon as the scribe has written the time.
