Scribe

The scribe is responsible for marking each dog's scribe sheet whenever the judge indicates a fault or calls out a number. The scribe must watch the Judge at all times during the run, they must never watch the dog or handler.

Recommended for:

Someone with previous trial experience.

  • Check the scribe sheet against the name of the dog as given by the gate steward to ensure that you've got the correct sheet for that dog.

  • Watch the Judge instead of the dogs. When the judge raises their hand(s) for a fault write that on the scribe sheet. If asked, the Judge will instruct you as to the meaning of the various hand signals. Signals are as follows:

    Judge's Signal Description NADAC CPE
Open Hand Raised Open Hand 5 Fault Penalty Bar Down - 5 Faults
Closed Hand Closed Hand Not Used Off Course - 5 Faults
Two Raised Hands Two Raised Open Hands 10 Fault Penalty Other Faults - 5 Faults
Two Hands Down Two Lowered/Down Hands 20 Fault Penalty Not Used
Arms Crossing Arms Crossing in Motion Not Used Major Fault - 15 Faults
No Time Hands forming "T" Not Used No Time
Whistle Whistle E - Excused Not Used

  • Do not stop writing faults down even though the dog NQs. Continue to mark faults as the Judge indicates them.

  • If you are unclear about a Judge's signal, wait until after the run is completed, then clarify the calls before the next dog starts.

  • When the dog finishes the run, get the time from the timer and write it down on the scribe sheet, just as the timer indicates. Repeat the time to the timer to double-check the accuracy.
