The Chief Course Builder provides instruction to the Course Builders about what pieces of equipment are needed and where to place them. They should obtain all courses from the Judges and plan efficient course changes.
Duties:
- If possible, supervise ring set up the night before the trial.
- Ensure that you have all course maps for the day. Decide upon a strategy for efficient and quick equipment changes. Brief your crew in advance as to who will move what piece of equipment. Have them ready to go when a new course must be built.
- The Chief Course Builder's job is to direct the work of the course builders. Don't waste time moving the equipment yourself. Instruct your people to come to you. You should quickly instruct them what equipment you want and where you want it. You should drop bars to show the position of jumps.
- For a Jumpers Course, the Base Line Method works well. If the judge has not done so ahead of time, while the other classes are running, mark off the course map to show where each piece of equipment goes from the base line. Be sure to note where the center of the bars goes because jump wing width and bar lengths may vary. To insure accurate course building, you need to have the center of the jump in the proper place.
- An alternate method of setting a Jumpers Course is to set the tunnels and the weave poles, then build the critical areas of the course from there.
- Assign someone to pick up the numbers and lay them back down between classes. (Keep them in order.)
- After the course has been built, keep your crew with you and tweak the obstacles.
- Finally call the judge to make any final adjustments to the course. Stay with the judge and move equipment as needed.
